 What is a Covenant Church?

The Evangelical Covenant Church has its roots in historical Christianity. It emerged in the Protestant Reformation, in the biblical instruction of the Lutheran Church of Sweden, and in the great spiritual awakenings of the nineteenth century. Its spiritual roots were established on the bedrock of Christianity, and have historically been characterized by adherance to the following principles: locally and globally.

Evangelical Covenant
  • An Evangelical Covenant Church is Christ-centered
You will find a strong emphasis on the new birth, on conversion, on living the new life, and on maturing in Christ.
  • An Evangelical Covenant Church is true to the centrality of Scripture
Great importance is placed on solid and practical teaching and preaching. Pastors and lay teachers diligently study to accurately proclaim the truths of Scripture with application for today's culture.
  • An Evangelical Covenant Church emphasizes the importance of a Spirit-filled life
You will find that Covenant people are encouraged to not only abide in Christ, but to grow in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit; to move beyond carnality and to find the joy and value of a Spirit-filled life.
  • An Evangelical Covenant Church is a worshipping church
A strong emphasis upon the importance of worship, both individually and corporately, will be found. Celebrative, contemplative and reflective worship will be experienced.
  • An Evangelical Covenant Church is where you are accepted and loved
Christians enjoy a wholesome freedom and flexibility which allow for certain differences (doctrinally and otherwise) without breaking the fellowship. We are encouraged to distinguish clearly between the essentials relating to our salvation (which are never to be compromised) and the non-essentials.
  • An Evangelical Covenant Church is an equipping church
The biblical model of a congregational life based on Ephesians 4 is working because pastors and staff act as enabling coaches, equipping the laity for spiritual ministry.
  • An Evangelical Covenant Church is interdependent
The local congregation values partnership with other churches, seeing itself as interdependent rather than independent. It believes that our God-given task as Christians is always a shared task, both
